In Those Who Trip The Light Fantastic
These photos showcase the DIY music scene in New York and Chicago. In these images, I document the raw energy and camaraderie inherent in DIY music culture thriving in these urban and suburban landscapes, and shine a light on the underground musicians, promoters, and fans who keep these scenes alive against commercialization that is ever present. There is always some sort of circuit within the scene maintaining the integrity behind artist releases and shows. All it takes is one person to kickstart their own label or collective to continue the cycle. If someone steps down, someone will take their place. The scene holds authenticity and vitality, but is ever changing. These images encapsulate this singular moment in time, and preserve the fleeting moments within the community.
I have been an active member of these scenes since I was seventeen, and it has truly become one of the most important things in my life. There is a special energy that is shared in those spaces. Its effect is what I find keeps bringing me back show after show. It's a world that can leave a mark on someone.
